Salvia elegans - Perennial clump forming shrub. 1.2- 1.5 metres height. Full sun to part shade. Leaves smell beautifully of pineapple. Lovely red flowers from summer through to autumn. Flowers very attractive to butterflies, bees and beneficial insects. Herbaceous in areas with very cold winters or frosts. Prune back to the ground when the plant dies back in the cold weather. The leaves are used to make a tea. The flowers and leaves are edible. Regular pruning maintains shape. Mulch well in hot weather. Medicinal plant, used in Mexican traditional medicine. Water well in hot weather, but less in colder weather. Prefers a rich moist well drained soil.
