Plantago major - Hardy herbaceous perennial. Full sun to part shade. Medicinal herb, used internally and externally. Used medicinally since ancient times. Used to make a tea. An edible plant, high in calcium and vitamins A,B1, C and K. Can be eaten raw or cooked. The leaves, seeds and root are edible. Grows well in most soil types, even heavily compacted soils. A great fodder plant for farm animals and small birds. Goats, pigs and sheep enjoy eating it, poultry especially enjoy eating the seeds. The seed spikes can be given to caged birds. It is medicinal for animals also, used internally and externally. Frost hardy. Will grow in coastal gardens.
