Allium fistulosum - A very rare, perennial Bunching Onion from Japan. Shimonita grows a lot bigger than other bunching onions. The stem grows very thick, similar to a leek. They are very cold hardy, and are also growing very well here, through the summer heat in full sun. It is very productive, multiplying well. A delicious flavoured onion, eaten raw or cooked. When they are cooked they become quite sweet. This onion is a delicacy in Japan, and is very renowned and popular there. Traditionally cooked by cutting in half lengthways and grilled or barbequed. Shimonita is very rare outside of Japan. This one is fast becoming one of my favourite onions.
