Origanum dictamnus - Rare deciduous perennial from Crete. 30 cms height, 40 cms width. Full sun, to part shade. Aromatic rounded green foliage. Stems and leaves covered in small hairs. Pink fragrant flowers produced in summer and autumn. A medicinal herb which has been used since ancient times. It was written about by Aristotle, Hippocrates and Theophrastus. A culinary herb also, used fresh or dried. It has a milder flavour than other oreganos. It is a rare and protected species in its native Crete. Must be grown in a well drained soil. Attracts bees and butterflies. A spreading growth habit makes this plant a good ground cover.
